Should I use dividends and interest or sell investments for retirement income?
Both are ways of taking money from the same portfolio. Dividends and interest arrive on their own timetable; selling lets you choose the amount and timing. The portfolio's total return is the same either way — what changes is tax character, timing and what you end up holding.
Living only on income can feel safer, but it can tilt a portfolio toward whatever pays the most income, and the amount varies. Selling gives control but requires choosing what to sell and when.
Many households use some of each. The right approach depends on spending needs, account types, cost basis, tax brackets, RMDs, Social Security, Medicare, charitable plans, estate objectives, investment risk and market conditions.
