Should I take my pension as a lump sum or monthly payments?
Monthly payments turn the pension into income that lasts as long as you do, and possibly as long as a spouse does, with no investment decisions. A lump sum gives you control, flexibility and something that can be left to heirs, but you take on the job of investing it and the risk of running out.
Not every plan offers a lump sum, and some allow part lump sum and part monthly. Neither choice is better in general: it is a trade between lifetime income and flexibility, and once payments begin the choice is often hard or impossible to reverse.
The right choice depends on the plan's actual figures, other reliable income, savings, health and family longevity, a spouse's needs, comfort managing investments, taxes and estate goals.
