Should I have taxes withheld from retirement withdrawals?
Federal income tax is withheld from traditional IRA distributions unless you choose otherwise. Periodic payments — installments over a period of more than one year — use Form W-4P. Other distributions, including a one-time withdrawal or a series that does not meet that test, use Form W-4R, which has an IRS default you can change. How often money arrives does not by itself decide which form applies.
Withholding is a way of prepaying tax during the year, not an extra tax and not your final bill — the actual tax is settled on your return. The other way to prepay is estimated tax payments. Paying too little during the year through either method can lead to a penalty.
How much to withhold depends on your total income, other withholding and deductions. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help check it, and your CPA can confirm the right setup.
