Can I switch between my own Social Security benefit and survivor benefits?
In some situations, yes. SSA's deemed filing rules — which treat an application for a retirement benefit as an application for a spouse's benefit — do not apply to survivor benefits. A person entitled to a survivor benefit is not deemed to file for their own retirement benefit and may restrict the application to the survivor benefit and file for retirement later.
That makes sequencing possible, but not automatically worthwhile. Whether starting one benefit and later moving to the other produces a higher payment depends on the ages involved and on both records, and even while both are available SSA pays the person's own benefit plus any excess survivor amount — not both in full.
We do not assume switching is available or valuable in any particular case. SSA confirms what is available on the records involved.
