What financial decisions should I avoid rushing after selling my business?
The decisions most worth slowing down are the ones that are large and hard to reverse: investing most of the proceeds at once, buying property, making large gifts or loans to family, committing to a new venture, and paying off low-cost debt without weighing liquidity. FINRA's guidance for anyone receiving a large sum starts the same way: make a plan before making big moves.
Slowing down does not mean doing nothing, and there is no required waiting period. Reserving for tax, keeping enough cash for near-term needs, replacing lost benefits and reviewing beneficiaries can often proceed while longer-term choices are considered.
