How can I replace my income if a disability prevents me from working?
Income during a disability usually comes from a combination of sources rather than one: individual disability-income insurance you own, any group coverage, savings and other liquid assets, a spouse's income, continued business distributions where the business can afford them, workers' compensation if the injury is work-related and the owner is covered, and Social Security disability if its strict definition is met.
Each source has its own trigger, waiting period, duration and limits. Social Security pays only for severe, long-term disability, and workers' compensation covers only occupational injury or sickness. Business profits may shrink precisely when the owner stops working.
For an owner, personal disability-income coverage is distinct from coverage that protects the business. Mapping which sources would actually pay, when, and for how long is the planning work; a licensed insurance professional reviews specific policies.
