Are benefits from a private disability-insurance policy taxable?
This page covers benefits from private disability-income insurance — an individual policy or employer-sponsored group coverage. Federal tax treatment generally depends on who paid the premiums and whether they were paid with pre-tax or after-tax dollars.
Under IRS guidance, benefits from coverage paid for by an employer are generally reported as income, and premiums paid through a cafeteria plan with pre-tax dollars are treated as employer-paid. If you paid the entire premium with after-tax dollars, benefits are generally not included in income. If both you and an employer paid, only the portion due to the employer's payments is generally reported, so mixed payment may require allocation.
For owners, entity type, payroll arrangements and owner-employee status can change who is treated as paying — particularly in an S corporation. Workers' compensation and Social Security disability benefits follow different rules. A CPA determines the actual result for your situation.
