What business income counts toward the Social Security earnings test?
The retirement earnings test looks at income from work, not at everything that reaches you. SSA counts wages from employment and net earnings from self-employment, and states that pensions, annuities, investment income, interest and veterans' or other government or military retirement benefits are not counted.
For a business owner that distinction does most of the work. A payment out of a company is not automatically the same thing as earnings from working in it, and which category a particular payment falls into depends on the entity, how you are compensated and how it is reported — a classification question for your CPA rather than something a general article can settle.
It is also worth keeping two separate questions apart. Whether benefits are withheld under the earnings test is an SSA question; whether the benefits you receive are includible in your federal taxable income is an income-tax question addressed in IRS Publication 915. They can both be affected by the same year's income without being the same rule.
